After for many months of lobbying, the law allowing solar installations on the roof of residential apartment buildings finally passed the Knesset [Heb] [Eng]. Until today, people living in apartment buildings had a very difficult time benefiting from solar energy because in order to build a solar system on the roof of the building (a shared space), they would have to get the unanimous approval of all the occupants. With the passing of the new law, now only 66.6% of the apartment owners in the building need to approve the project, instead of 100%, making it much easier for apartment dwellers in Israel to go solar.
This is particularly significant because about 80% of Israel's population lives in apartments.
Vaad solar has been working for over year now to develop the residential solar market in Israel, and specifically focused on apartment buildings. This untapped market allows people that live in apartment buildings to finally benefit from solar. Considering that roof sizes are relatively small, and the revenue and cost of solar projects would have to be divided by all the residents in a building, even with the law, a solar energy system on the roof of an apartment building still may be out of the reach for many Israelis.
Vaad Solar has a unique business model that allows apartment owners in Israel to build a solar energy system on the roof of their building with no investment or fees. Vaad Solar handles all permits, planning, and installation. The money generated from the sale of the electricity to the Israel Electric Company is deposited directly into the bank shared bank account for the building's vaad bayit and used for shared building expenses, like stairwell cleaning, elevator expenses, lobby lighting, gardening, and repairs to shared spaces.
